Definitions
Ten terms every buyer should understand
Credential, reader, controller, electronic lock, free egress, REX, door contact, fail-safe, offline operation and audit trail. Together they explain who enters, who decides, what releases the door, how people leave and what evidence the system retains.
Core system terms
- Access control system
- A system that identifies a person or vehicle, applies permission rules and controls an opening such as a door, gate, turnstile or lift floor. A complete system includes the opening hardware, safe exit method, power, control and administration - not only the reader.
- Credential
- The evidence a user presents, such as a card, fob, PIN, phone credential, QR code or biometric. The credential identifies or verifies the user; it does not directly make the door safe or compatible.
- Reader
- The device that receives a credential at the opening. A reader may pass credential data to a protected controller or may be combined with a controller in a standalone terminal.
- Door controller
- The device that stores or receives access rules, evaluates credential events, monitors door inputs and operates lock outputs. In higher-security systems it is mounted on the secure side so removing the external reader does not expose the lock relay.
- Standalone access control
- A door system administered locally at the reader or terminal. It can suit a simple opening but may provide limited central reporting, remote revocation, integration or backup.
- Networked access control
- Controllers or terminals connected to common software or cloud administration. Users, schedules, alarms and reports can be managed centrally, while properly selected controllers continue operating locally during a network interruption.
- Audit trail
- A time-stamped record of access events, rejected credentials, door alarms and administrative changes. A useful audit trail requires correct user naming, time synchronisation, retention, backups and controlled administrator access.
- Offline operation
- The controller's ability to make access decisions and operate doors when the management server, network or internet is unavailable. Offline behaviour, event buffering and later event upload should be tested rather than assumed.
Door hardware, exit and monitoring
- Electronic locking
- An electric strike, magnetic lock, electrified mortice lock, motor lock, drop bolt or electrified exit device used to control the opening. Selection depends on the door, latch, frame, handing, fire rating, egress, environment and required failure state.
- Electric strike
- An electrically controlled keeper installed in the frame. It normally works with compatible mechanical latch hardware and can preserve mechanical exit operation from the secure side.
- Magnetic lock or maglock
- An electromagnet and armature plate that hold the door closed while energised. It is normally fail-safe and requires a carefully designed egress, emergency release and power arrangement.
- Electrified mortice lock
- A mortice lock with an electrically controlled locking function while retaining the specified mechanical lever, latch and egress operation. Door preparation, handing, monitoring options and cable transfer must match the lock.
- Fail-safe
- A locking state that releases when power is removed. This describes electrical failure behaviour only; it does not by itself prove that the door complies with egress or fire requirements.
- Fail-secure
- A locking state that remains secured from the entry side when power is removed. Safe mechanical egress may still be available from the exit side. Confirm the exact product behaviour rather than relying on the label alone.
- Free egress
- The ability for an occupant to leave without needing an access credential. Required exit and path-of-travel doors must follow the approved building and egress design; an exit button is not automatically a substitute for compliant mechanical operation.
- Request to exit or REX
- An input telling the controller that someone is legitimately leaving. It may come from a motion sensor, handle switch, exit button or other device. Depending on the design, it may suppress a forced-door alarm, initiate unlock timing or both.
- A manually operated button used to request release or interrupt a circuit. Its contact rating, function, supervision and relationship to emergency release must be documented.
- Door contact
- A switch that reports whether the door is physically open or closed. It enables forced-open, held-open and door-state events but does not prove the latch is mechanically secure unless the selected monitoring covers that state.
- Door forced open / door held open
- Forced open means the door opened without an authorised entry or expected exit event. Held open means it remained open beyond the configured time. Both require correct contact wiring, timing and response procedures.
- Emergency release
- An approved means of removing or overriding locking power so occupants can leave under the required emergency conditions. The arrangement may involve direct power interruption, monitored break-glass hardware and a coordinated fire interface.
Communication and access logic
- OSDP
- Open Supervised Device Protocol, commonly used for bidirectional RS-485 communication between compatible readers and controllers. It supports device supervision and, where configured by compatible devices, Secure Channel encryption.
- Wiegand
- A legacy one-way reader interface using data lines commonly labelled D0 and D1. It remains widely supported but normally lacks the supervision and encrypted reader communication available with properly configured OSDP.
- OSDP Secure Channel
- The encrypted OSDP session between compatible reader and controller. It must be enabled, commissioned and verified; using RS-485 conductors does not automatically mean Secure Channel is active.
- RS-485
- An electrical communication layer used by OSDP and other device protocols. Cable, shielding, topology, termination, device addressing and maximum distances must follow the manufacturer design.
- Anti-passback
- Logic that uses entry and sometimes exit events to stop a credential being reused contrary to policy. It requires reliable reader placement, occupancy state and a documented recovery process for missed events.
- Interlock or mantrap
- A controlled sequence where one door must reach a defined state before another door can unlock. Safety overrides, fire behaviour, accessibility, entrapment risk and local approval are fundamental parts of the design.
- Two-factor or dual-credential entry
- Requiring two different credential factors or authorised people before access is granted. Card-plus-PIN is different from two-person authorisation; the intended policy must be stated clearly.
- Supervised input
- An input circuit designed to distinguish normal, alarm and some wiring-fault states by using specified resistance values or device supervision. Exact resistor locations and values are product-specific.
Power and cabling
- Inrush and holding current
- Inrush is the short higher current some locks draw when they first operate; holding current is the ongoing draw. PSU, relay and conductor sizing must account for the manufacturer's worst-case values and simultaneous operation.
- Voltage drop
- The reduction in voltage between the power supply and load caused by conductor resistance and current. Measure the route and calculate conductor size, then verify voltage at the device while it is operating.
- Battery standby time
- The period the system is intended to operate from backup batteries. The calculation should include all connected loads, simultaneous conditions, battery ageing allowance and the required end-of-standby operation.
- Individually protected output
- A lock or device circuit with its own correctly rated fuse or electronic protection. Individual protection and labelling help prevent one cable fault disabling unrelated doors.
- Door cable transfer
- Protected hardware carrying cable from the fixed frame into a moving door leaf. Use a transfer method suited to the door, hinge geometry, conductor requirements, fire rating and expected duty.
- Home run
- A dedicated cable route from one device or door back to its controller or cabinet. Some reader buses allow other topologies; follow the selected system manual rather than assuming a daisy chain or home run.
Operations and handover
- Credential revocation
- Disabling a lost credential or removing a former user's access. A good offboarding process also addresses mobile credentials, PINs, administrator accounts and related alarm or intercom access.
- Role-based access
- Assigning permissions through job or tenancy groups rather than editing every person door by door. This improves consistency but requires ownership, approval and periodic review of each role.
- Commissioning
- Structured testing that proves each credential, input, output, alarm, integration, failure mode and report works as designed. Results, exceptions and witness acceptance should be recorded.
- As-built documentation
- The final record of installed equipment, cable routes, terminations, addresses, power calculations, licences, configurations and approved changes. It should match the actual installed system, not only the original quote.
- Cause-and-effect test
- A test that applies a defined event - such as credential accepted, door forced, fire input or network loss - and records every expected system response.
- Mustering
- Using access events to assist with occupant accounting. Door events alone may not prove who remains onsite, particularly where exits are unmonitored, people tailgate or emergency evacuation bypasses normal readers.
Australian project boundary
Definitions are not approvals. Required exits, fire doors, accessible paths, communications cabling, electrical work, privacy and security licensing may involve different legislation, standards and competent persons. Record unresolved items on the door schedule before ordering hardware.
