Frequently Asked Questions
Is an 8MP Hikvision camera the same as 4K?
Hikvision 8MP IP cameras are commonly described as 4K-class CCTV because they record approximately eight megapixels of image information. The extra pixels can provide useful additional detail when the lens, camera position and lighting conditions support it. Resolution alone does not guarantee a better image, so viewing distance, mounting height and night performance should still form part of the camera choice.
Should I choose an 8MP or 6MP Hikvision camera?
An 8MP camera can provide additional recorded pixels where finer image detail is important, while 6MP generally places lower demands on recorder bandwidth and storage. The better choice depends on viewing distance, scene lighting, lens selection and the size of the complete CCTV system. Some installations may use 8MP for more demanding views and 6MP for shorter or less critical positions.
Will my Hikvision NVR record 8MP cameras?
Supported 8MP Hikvision IP cameras can be recorded by compatible Hikvision NVRs, but the recorder needs sufficient incoming bandwidth, camera channels and PoE capacity for the number of cameras being installed. Channel count alone does not determine whether a recorder is suitable for a large 8MP system. Storage should also be considered because higher-resolution streams can increase HDD requirements.
Do all Hikvision 8MP cameras provide ColorVu night vision?
No. Night-imaging technology varies between models. Selected 8MP ColorVu cameras are designed to provide useful full-colour imaging in low-light scenes, while other cameras use infrared. Smart Hybrid Light models can combine infrared and visible illumination for additional flexibility. Choose according to the actual lighting conditions and the type of evidence required after dark.
What is Hikvision AcuSense on an 8MP camera?
AcuSense is Hikvision technology designed to improve intelligent surveillance by identifying human and vehicle activity on supported cameras and recorders. This can help focus alerts and recorded searches on more relevant movement. AcuSense and night-imaging technology are separate features, so an 8MP AcuSense camera may use infrared, ColorVu or another supported imaging configuration depending on the model.
Do Hikvision 8MP cameras have built-in microphones?
Selected Hikvision 8MP cameras include a built-in microphone for recording audio together with video. Other models focus on video surveillance without onboard audio. If recorded sound is important, compare microphone-equipped cameras alongside the required night imaging, intelligent detection and lens configuration. Two-way communication is a separate capability available on selected models.
Can I get active deterrence on a Hikvision 8MP camera?
Selected Hikvision 8MP cameras provide active-response features such as warning lights, audible alerts or two-way communication. These models can be useful around entrances, driveways, shopfronts and other exposed areas where an immediate warning may help discourage unwanted activity. Active deterrence is model-specific and should be chosen according to the surveillance requirements rather than assumed from the 8MP resolution.
Do 8MP cameras need different network cable?
Hikvision 8MP IP cameras still use standard Ethernet-based networking and PoE on supported models, so the resolution itself does not require a different connector or special camera cable. The main difference is the amount of video data being recorded. Good-quality cabling, suitable PoE power and adequate recorder bandwidth remain important for reliable operation.
Can I buy a complete Hikvision 8MP CCTV kit?
Yes. Complete Hikvision 8MP CCTV packages combine multiple cameras with a compatible PoE NVR for a new multi-camera installation. Kits vary by camera count, housing style, night-imaging technology, smart features and storage inclusion. A complete kit is useful when starting a new system, while standalone 8MP cameras are better suited to expanding an existing compatible Hikvision recorder.
