How to Export Footage from a Dahua NVR
Playback and Export
Summary
For a complete incident export, use the NVR's local Backup screen and a USB drive. For a short clip needed quickly on a phone, use DMSS Playback and the Clip control.
Applies to
- Dahua NVRs
- Local USB footage export
- Short DMSS clips saved to a phone
Difficulty and time
Difficulty: Moderate
Estimated time: 15 to 30 minutes for a single incident
What you will need
- Local monitor and mouse on the recorder
- Known-good USB device
- Correct incident date and time
- A computer to test the USB export
- A phone with DMSS for the optional mobile method
What this guide covers
- Find the incident in Playback
- Open Backup and search the exact time range
- Export the selected files to USB
- Save a short alternative clip through DMSS
- Test the export and protect the original copy
Export problems are often search problems: the wrong camera, date or time range was selected, or the completed file was never checked.
Use the local NVR and USB method for the most complete export. Use the DMSS method when you need a short clip saved quickly to a phone for convenient sharing.
Before you start
Record these details before opening Backup. They prevent the most common wrong-camera, wrong-time and unusable-file handovers.
- Write down the incident date, reported time and every camera name or channel that may show it.
- Compare the timestamp shown in NVR Playback with the current time on a phone. Write down any difference rather than guessing later.
- Decide whether you need the complete USB export or only a short DMSS sharing clip.
- For USB export, use a drive with no important files and enough free space. Formatting a drive erases it.
- If police or an insurer requested the footage, ask whether they want a particular time range or file format before exporting.
Preserve the first complete USB export
If the footage may be evidence, do not trim, rename, convert or edit the first complete USB export. Put a duplicate on another drive or computer and share the duplicate.
Record the NVR's displayed time, timezone and any known clock difference. A clip can be correct even when the recorder timestamp is offset from the reported incident time.
Choose the export method before you start
| Use | Best for | What you receive | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVR + USB | Police, insurance, workplace incidents, long periods or several cameras | The recorder's original files in MP4 or DAV, depending on model and firmware | You must be at the recorder with a compatible USB drive |
| DMSS app | A short clip needed quickly on a phone for viewing or informal sharing | A clipped video first stored in DMSS My Files, then saved or shared from the phone | The NVR must be online in DMSS and the account must have playback permission |
What the main file choices mean
- MP4: easiest to open and share on ordinary computers and phones. Choose it when the recorder offers it and the recipient has not requested another format.
- DAV: Dahua's native recording format. It can preserve the recorder export path but normally needs Dahua Smart Player.
- Several files for one incident: normal when the NVR divides recordings into segments. Select and test every consecutive file that covers the incident.
Step 1: Find and check the incident in Playback
At the NVR, right-click the live view and choose Main Menu. Open Search or Video (the label depends on firmware). Do not start the export until you have watched enough footage to identify the correct camera and time range.
- On the calendar at the right, click the incident date. A dot, highlight or differently coloured date indicates recorded footage.
- Tick one required camera under the calendar. If several cameras matter, repeat this check for each channel and write down every channel number.
- Look for coloured blocks on the timeline at the bottom. A blank section means the NVR has no recording for that channel and time.
- Click or double-click the timeline near the event to start playback. Use a narrower timeline scale, if shown, to locate the time more precisely.
- Write down a start time that includes useful lead-in and an end time after the event; for example, 01:35 to 02:00 for an incident reported at 01:42.
Step 2: Insert the USB drive and open File Backup
Plug the USB drive into a USB port on the NVR. If USB Device Found appears, choose File Backup. If no prompt appears, right-click live view, choose Main Menu, move to the second menu page when required, and open Backup.
- In the destination window, click Browse or the folder button beside Path. Select the USB drive, open or create a clearly named folder, and click OK.
- Confirm the screen shows the USB device and available capacity. If the required space later exceeds the free space, shorten the time range or use a larger drive.
- If the drive is missing, click Refresh and try the other USB port. A simple blank FAT32-formatted USB stick is the safest compatibility test on older recorders.
- Formatting a USB drive erases its contents. Copy anything important off it before formatting on a computer or recorder.
- Do not choose Config Backup or Import/Export; those save recorder settings, not recorded video.
Step 3: Search for the exact recording files
On the Backup screen, use the fields at the top to tell the NVR which recordings to list.
- Set Record CH or Channel to the camera number proved in Step 1. Some Dahua interfaces search only one channel at a time.
- Set Type or Record Type to All for the safest search. Selecting Motion, Alarm or Intelligent can hide footage if the system was actually recording as General or Continuous.
- Enter the Start Time and End Time exactly, including the correct date. Avoid an unnecessarily large range because it creates more files and takes longer to copy.
- Click Search or Add. The matching recordings should appear in the lower results list. If the list is empty, return to Playback and prove that the same channel and period contains coloured recording blocks.
- Compare Required Space with the USB drive Free Space before continuing.
Step 4: Select the files and run the USB backup
The search only finds recordings; it does not copy them. Select the required rows in the results list before starting the backup.
- Tick the checkbox beside every file covering the incident. Dahua may split one time range into several files, so select all consecutive files needed for the full event.
- Choose Record or Video rather than Picture if the screen asks for Backup Type.
- Choose MP4 when it is offered and the recipient needs normal computer playback. Choose DAV for the Dahua-native recording package; DAV normally requires Dahua Smart Player.
- Click Backup or Start and watch the progress indicator. Do not remove the USB drive, restart the NVR or cut power during the copy.
- Wait for Backup successful or Finished, click OK, and note the destination folder before removing the USB drive.
Step 5: Alternative: save a short clip in DMSS
Use DMSS for a quick phone copy when the recorder is online in the app and your account has playback permission. Use one channel at a time and keep the app open while it prepares the clip.
- Open DMSS, tap Device, locate the NVR and tap Playback. Tap an empty video tile, then select the required camera channel.
- Choose the incident date. DMSS starts on today on some versions, so verify the displayed date before moving the timeline.
- Drag the timeline to the start of the event and tap the scissors or Clip icon. Set the start point, press Play, move to the end point, press Stop, and tap OK.
- Wait for the Downloading video record message to finish before leaving the playback screen.
- Tap Home, then Me > My Files > Video. Tap Edit, select the new clip, tap the Save icon, and choose the phone album or sharing destination. Allow Photos or Storage access if the phone prompts you.
Step 6: Verify the result before leaving the recorder
A completed progress bar proves that data was copied, not that the correct incident was copied. Open the actual exported files before the recorder or site is no longer available.
- On a computer, open every MP4. For DAV, open the files in Dahua Smart Player and include the player or viewing instructions when handing them over.
- Check that the clip begins before the incident, continues through the event and ends afterwards. Confirm the camera view and on-screen timestamp.
- If several files were exported, confirm they are consecutive and that none of the incident is missing between them.
- Keep the first USB export untouched when police, insurance or a formal investigation may need it. Make a duplicate for email, editing or everyday sharing.
- Treat the DMSS clip as the convenient viewing copy; use the local USB export as the primary copy when completeness matters.
Worked example with an exact search window
Situation: An alarm report says the rear loading door opened at 1:42 am, and the relevant view is Camera 04. Playback shows the NVR clock is two minutes slow.
Solution used: The customer opens Main Menu > Search, checks Camera 04 and confirms the event appears at 1:40 am on the NVR. They write down 01:33 to 01:55 to include lead-in and aftermath. In Main Menu > Backup they choose Channel 04, Type: All, enter that range, click Search, tick every consecutive result, choose MP4 and click Backup.
Why this was chosen: The clock difference is accounted for, the wider window preserves context, and selecting every consecutive result avoids a gap when the NVR splits the period into several files.
Installation notes: The exported files are opened on a computer before the USB drive leaves the site. The untouched USB folder is retained and a duplicate is supplied to the insurer.
Common mistakes
- Opening Config Backup or Import/Export instead of File Backup. Those menus save settings, not video.
- Searching by the reported incident time without checking whether the NVR clock is fast or slow.
- Filtering for Motion or Alarm when the footage was recorded as General or Continuous; use Type: All when uncertain.
- Clicking Search but forgetting to tick the returned files before clicking Backup or Start.
- Selecting only one result even though the incident spans several consecutive recording files.
- Removing the USB drive when the progress bar reaches the end but before the success message appears.
- Handing over DAV files without confirming they open in Dahua Smart Player.
- Leaving a DMSS clip only inside My Files and not saving it to the phone album or sharing destination.
Troubleshooting table
| Symptom | What to check | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| USB drive does not appear | The destination list is empty or still shows no device after insertion | Click Refresh, try the other NVR USB port, then test with a blank known-good FAT32 USB stick. Formatting erases the drive, so copy its contents elsewhere first. |
| Search or Add returns no files | Wrong channel, date, record-type filter or an actual recording gap | Return to Search or Video Playback. Prove that the same channel and time shows coloured recording blocks. Then retry Backup with Type set to All. |
| Required space is larger than free space | The selected files will not fit on the USB drive | Shorten the time range without cutting out the incident, export fewer channels at a time, or use a larger empty drive. |
| The incident is split into several files | The NVR created separate recording segments | Tick every consecutive file covering the start, incident and aftermath. After export, open them in order and check there is no missing time between files. |
| MP4 opens but shows the wrong time or camera | The wrong channel was selected or the NVR clock differs from actual time | Compare the exported timestamp with Playback and the incident report. Recalculate the offset and repeat the search on the correct channel. |
| DAV file will not open | The computer is using a normal media player | Open the file with Dahua Smart Player. If the recipient cannot use DAV, repeat the export as MP4 when the recorder offers it. |
| Backup stops, produces a zero-byte file or never shows success | Unreliable USB drive, insufficient capacity or removal before completion | Delete only the failed copy, use another known-good drive with adequate space, repeat the export and wait for the recorder's success message. |
| DMSS Playback has no footage | Wrong date or channel, NVR offline, or the shared account lacks playback permission | Prove the recording locally on the NVR. In DMSS reselect the exact channel and date, confirm the device is online, and have the owner check playback permission for the shared user. |
| DMSS says the clip downloaded but it is not in the phone gallery | The clip is still stored only inside DMSS My Files | Go to Me > My Files > Video, tap Edit, select the clip, tap Save, and approve Photos or Storage permission when prompted. |
When to contact support
Contact SecurityWholesalers support after you can play the required period on the NVR but Backup still returns no files, stops repeatedly or creates files that cannot be opened.
Send the NVR model and firmware version, a photo of the Backup screen, the channel and exact start/end time used, USB capacity and format, chosen export format, the precise error message, and whether local Playback works. These details let support reproduce the failure instead of asking you to repeat the first checks.

Frequently asked questions
-
What do I click to export footage from a Dahua NVR?
Right-click Live View, choose Main Menu, then open Backup. If inserting the USB drive opens a USB Device Found window, choose File Backup instead. Set the channel and time range, click Search or Add, tick the required results, then click Backup or Start.
-
Why can I not find Backup on my Dahua recorder?
On some firmware it is on the second page of Main Menu. You can also insert the USB drive and choose File Backup from the USB Device Found prompt. Do not use Config Backup or Import/Export, which save settings rather than footage.
-
Can I export Dahua footage through DMSS?
Yes. In DMSS open Device > Playback, select one camera and the incident date, move the timeline to the event, then use the scissors or Clip control. The saved clip is under Me > My Files > Video, where it can be saved to the phone or shared.
-
Should I choose MP4 or DAV?
Choose MP4 when available for easier playback and sharing. DAV is Dahua's native format and may require Dahua Smart Player. Test the exact exported file before leaving the recorder.
-
Why did the Dahua NVR create several files for one time range?
The NVR stores recordings in segments, so one incident can span several consecutive files. Tick every file that covers the lead-in, incident and aftermath, then test them in order for gaps.
-
What should I do if the NVR does not detect my USB drive?
Click Refresh, try the other USB port, then test with a blank known-good FAT32 USB stick. Copy anything important off a drive before formatting it because formatting erases its contents.
-
Is a DMSS clip suitable for police or insurance?
It is useful for quick sharing, but the local NVR-to-USB export is the safer primary method when evidence completeness matters. Keep the original export untouched and share a copy.
