Uniview PTZ Buying Guide

A PTZ is useful when the site has a real overview and live-control job for it. It is a poor substitute for fixed evidence cameras and a poor answer to an underspecified camera plan.

What PTZ adds that fixed cameras do not

A PTZ adds live steering, presets, tours, and optical zoom range. That makes it useful on yards, car dealerships, larger hospitality venues, transport edges, campuses, and open forecourts where a person will actually use the camera to look around, follow movement, or zoom in on a part of the site. It does not change the fact that the site still needs fixed cameras on gates, counters, doors, and other evidence positions.

How to think about zoom ranges

Zoom range What it usually means Common fit
5x to 10x Compact overview PTZs for shorter-range scenes Small forecourts, hotel entries, compact car yards, hospitality spaces
20x to 25x More serious external PTZ branch for broader yards and longer sight lines Trade yards, school grounds, wider car yards, medium industrial sites
30x and above Longer-range PTZ branch where mounting height and sight line support it Larger campuses, wider industrial exteriors, transport or perimeter roles

Common PTZ mount positions

  • Wall or parapet mounts - common on building edges looking across aprons, car parks, and yards.
  • Pole mounts - common where the PTZ needs a clearer central position over a yard or boundary.
  • Pendant or ceiling mounts - more common indoors or under larger covered zones.
Example

Dealer yard frontage

A compact car yard can justify a small-to-mid PTZ if staff regularly review test-drive departures, late-night vehicle activity, or customer movement across a broad frontage. It still needs fixed cameras at the entry gate and office door because the PTZ cannot be everywhere at once.

Example

School grounds overview

A school can justify a PTZ on the main external grounds if staff want a live overview of a larger field edge, drop-off lane, or open area after hours. It should still be treated as a support view. The gates, reception edge, and walkway entries still need fixed evidence cameras.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When is a Uniview PTZ justified?

A Uniview PTZ is justified when the site has a real live-overview role, such as car yards, larger forecourts, transport edges, yards, or campuses where staff actively use presets, tours, or zoom control.

  • What does 5x, 25x, or 32x zoom mean in practice?

Zoom numbers describe how much the optical lens range can narrow the view. In practice they matter only when the mounting position, sight line, and target distance make that range usable. A larger zoom number does not guarantee better footage on its own.

  • Should a PTZ replace fixed cameras?

No. A PTZ should support fixed evidence cameras rather than replace them. Fixed cameras still provide the stable face, plate, and transactional views the site needs later.

  • Where are Uniview PTZs usually mounted?

They are commonly mounted on walls, parapets, poles, and pendant or ceiling mounts depending on whether the scene is a yard, a façade, an open forecourt, or an internal open space.

  • Which Uniview PTZ products are useful reference points?

Useful reference points include the IPC6324LWH-AX5C-VG2 compact PTZ path and larger longer-range PTZs such as the IPC6424SR-X25-VF-B for more demanding open-area roles.
