What is a Hikvision ANPR camera?
ANPR stands for automatic number plate recognition. Unlike a general-purpose CCTV camera, an ANPR model is selected and configured specifically for vehicle and plate capture. What is the difference between an ANPR camera and a normal CCTV camera?
A conventional CCTV camera is designed to provide general surveillance of a scene, while an ANPR camera is configured specifically to capture and recognise number plates. ANPR systems consider factors such as plate size in the image, vehicle movement, exposure and night illumination. A normal camera may show a readable plate under favourable conditions, but a dedicated ANPR solution is the better choice when plate recognition, vehicle searching or access-control integration is a core requirement.
Where should a Hikvision ANPR camera be installed?
ANPR works best where vehicles pass through a reasonably predictable capture point, such as a driveway, boom gate, car park entrance or loading-area access road. The camera should have a clear view of the registration plate and be positioned so the plate is not excessively angled or obstructed. Exact mounting distance and height depend on the camera, lens and site layout, so the installation should be planned around the actual lane rather than using one standard position for every project.
Can Hikvision ANPR cameras capture number plates at night?
Selected Hikvision ANPR cameras are designed for night-time vehicle and plate capture using infrared or other supported low-light and illumination technologies. Performance still depends on the installation, including vehicle speed, capture distance, headlights, reflective plates and surrounding lighting. Selected ColorVu or hybrid-light ANPR models can also provide additional colour information around the vehicle, which may be useful when reviewing an incident or identifying vehicle characteristics after dark.
Do Hikvision ANPR cameras require a licence?
Licence requirements depend on the ANPR camera, recorder, software platform and the functions required from the system. Some applications may only need compatible camera and recorder functionality, while more advanced vehicle management, access-control or software features may require additional components or licensing. If you need plate lists, automated gate operation, advanced searching or another specific workflow, it is worth confirming the complete system requirements before selecting the hardware.
Can Hikvision ANPR integrate with a Hikvision NVR?
Supported Hikvision ANPR cameras can be used with compatible Hikvision NVRs for centralised recording and live viewing, while selected combinations can also support vehicle-event and plate-search functions. The available ANPR functionality depends on the camera, recorder and system configuration. When planning a new installation or adding ANPR to an existing recorder, consider available channels, PoE capacity and the vehicle-search or management functions you want the completed system to provide.
Can Hikvision ANPR be used to control a gate or boom barrier?
ANPR can form part of a vehicle access-control solution where recognised registration plates are used to support entry decisions. Depending on the equipment and system design, this may include approved vehicle lists and integration with gates or boom barriers. Access-control projects should be planned as a complete system because camera recognition is only one part of the workflow; the recorder, software, access equipment and required integrations also need to support the intended operation.
