AXIS Camera Not Getting an IP Address

When an AXIS camera does not get an IP address, the fault is usually DHCP, switch path, PoE, a remembered static address, or the way the camera was previously commissioned.

AXIS Network Support

AXIS network camera
AXIS support jobs usually come back to the camera identity, Camera Station workflow, network path and user permissions rather than one flashy feature.

Summary

Use this guide when an AXIS camera is not appearing on the LAN, AXIS discovery tools cannot find it, or the camera seems to have the wrong IP history.

Applies to

  • AXIS IP cameras
  • New installations and recommissioning jobs
  • Camera Station and direct-network setups

Difficulty and time

Difficulty: Moderate

Estimated time: 20 to 40 minutes

What you will need

  • Access to the switch or NVR path
  • Known-good patch lead
  • Laptop on the same LAN
  • AXIS IP Utility or equivalent discovery method where available

What this guide covers

  • Prove power and link first
  • Check DHCP and discovery
  • Check for a remembered static IP
  • Only then consider reset

AXIS cameras are usually straightforward once the network path is clean, but a camera that is not appearing on the expected subnet can still waste time if the installer assumes it is dead too early.

This guide is written to help you separate power issues, DHCP issues, static-IP leftovers and discovery-tool issues in a deliberate order.

Before you start

Treat this as a local network job first, not a cloud or app job.

  • Know whether the site is using DHCP or a preplanned static range.
  • Have a short known-good patch lead ready.
  • Check whether the camera may have been commissioned previously on another subnet.
  • Make sure the laptop is really on the same LAN for discovery.
Important

Do not assume the camera is dead just because it is not on the expected subnet

A remembered static address, a VLAN mismatch or a switch-path issue can hide a healthy camera.

Resetting a camera should not be the first move if the network path has not been proven.

Step 1: Prove power and link first

Start with PoE, link lights and one known-good cable path before chasing discovery tools.

  • Use a known-good PoE source.
  • Test with a short patch lead.
  • Confirm switch-port link activity.
  • Separate power questions from IP questions.

Step 2: Check DHCP and discovery

If the camera powers properly, the next question is whether DHCP is available and whether the camera is discoverable on that LAN.

  • Check the router or DHCP server if relevant.
  • Use AXIS IP Utility or the supported discovery method.
  • Look for the camera on the current subnet.
  • Check whether the laptop is on the same network.

Step 3: Check for a remembered static address

A previously commissioned camera may still be sitting on a static IP that does not fit the current job.

  • Ask whether the camera came from another site.
  • Search surrounding likely subnets if needed.
  • Look for IP conflicts before assigning a new address.
  • Document the address once found.

Step 4: Only then consider reset or recommissioning

If the camera powers properly but still cannot be found or addressed, the next step may be a supported reset and recommissioning path.

  • Use the legitimate supported reset process only.
  • Record the serial and model before changing anything.
  • Recheck discovery after the reset path.
  • Avoid random changes across multiple subnets at once.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the short PoE test.
  • Forgetting the camera may hold an old static IP.
  • Using discovery tools from the wrong subnet.
  • Resetting the camera before the network path is proven.

Troubleshooting table

Symptom What to check What to do next
No discovery at all Power, VLAN or subnet path issue Prove the port, power and LAN path first.
Camera appears on a strange address Old static IP or reused device history Document the address and replan the network cleanly.
Discovery tool still sees nothing Laptop not on same LAN or DHCP issue Check the local test topology and DHCP path.

When to contact support

Contact SecurityWholesalers support when the AXIS model, switch path and discovery results are known, but the camera still cannot be found or recommissioned cleanly.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why is my AXIS camera not getting an IP address?

Usually because of PoE, DHCP, switch-path issues, or a remembered static IP from previous commissioning.

  • Should I use AXIS IP Utility?

Yes, where supported. It is a useful way to discover cameras on the local LAN.

  • Can an old static IP hide the camera?

Yes. A reused camera may still sit on an address that does not match the current site.

  • Should I reset the camera first?

Usually no. Prove the local network path first.

  • Do I need to be on the same subnet?

Usually yes for the cleanest discovery workflow.
