Here’s the safest step-by-step way to remove a hard drive from a Hikvision NVR:
- Shut the NVR down properly from the menu if you can.
- Turn the power off at the switch or unplug the power lead.
- Disconnect all cables so you can move the recorder easily.
- Put the NVR on a stable table.
- Get your Phillips-head screwdriver ready.
Then do one of these methods, depending on the NVR style:
A. Standard lid / top-cover Hikvision NVR
This is the most common type.
- Remove the screws at the back of the recorder.
- Slide the lid backwards and lift it off. Hikvision describes this as unfastening the rear screws and pushing the cover backward to remove it.
- Find the hard drive inside.
- Gently unplug the two cables from the HDD:
- SATA data cable
- Power cable
- Remove the screws holding the HDD to the bracket or base.
- Lift the hard drive out carefully.
B. Front panel / lockable drive-bay Hikvision NVR
Some larger units have a front door and key.
- Unlock the front panel with the key.
- Open the front panel.
- If it is a simple plug-pull bay, pull the drive out once released. Hikvision says some models use a front panel that opens with the attached key, then the HDD is inserted or removed through the front.
- If it has a drive caddy/handle, press the release button, pop the handle out, and pull the HDD tray out.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the HDD from the caddy if needed. Hikvision’s HDD case method uses screws on the sides of the case.
After removing it
- Put the lid or tray back.
- Refit the screws.
- Reconnect the cables.
- Power the NVR back on.
A few important cautions:
- Do not pull a drive while the NVR is still running unless you are certain that exact model supports hot swapping. Hikvision warns to disconnect power if the device does not support hot-swap.
- If the drive contains footage you need, removal may stop recording and could affect access to stored video.
- Handle the HDD gently and avoid static.
