NDIS, Assistive Technology and Home Security

SecurityWholesalers can help with product selection, but NDIS funding decisions sit with the participant's plan, NDIS rules and the relevant supports. Do not assume a camera, intercom or panic button will be funded.

NDIS context

Quick answer

If the equipment is being considered because of disability-related access, safety or independence needs, involve the participant, support coordinator, plan manager, occupational therapist or NDIS contact before purchasing.

How to frame the discussion

Need Possible security equipment Who to involve
Cannot safely reach the door. Video intercom, app answering, possible door release. Participant, OT, support coordinator, installer.
Needs reachable emergency help. Panic buttons or duress alarm. Participant, family/responders, support coordinator.
Needs safer support-worker entry. Intercom, entry camera, access rules. Participant, provider, support coordinator.
Needs home changes or cabling. Intercom cabling, camera cabling, door hardware. NDIS contact, landlord/owner if relevant, installer.

Official resources

Do not promise

  • Do not promise NDIS funding.
  • Do not call ordinary CCTV a clinical monitoring system.
  • Do not install equipment that removes control from the participant without proper consent and authority.
  • Do not ignore landlord, strata or property-owner permission where installation affects the building.

Quote language that helps

A useful quote should describe the functional problem the equipment supports. For example: "video intercom to allow the participant to identify and speak to visitors without transferring to the front door" is more useful than "intercom system".

Functional need Useful quote wording
Cannot safely reach door. Accessible door-answering support from primary living position.
Needs emergency help from bed or wheelchair. Reachable duress activation points tested from daily positions.
Support-worker access needs clearer records. Entry camera and intercom workflow for visitor verification and access review.

Frequently asked questions

Can SecurityWholesalers decide if NDIS will fund it?

No. SecurityWholesalers can help with product information and quotes, but funding decisions need the participant's NDIS context and relevant advice.

Should an OT be involved?

Often yes when placement, access, mounting height, communication, home modification or functional need must be documented.
