Product Overview

Combining thermal imaging with a 4MP optical sensor in a single turret housing, the Hikvision DS-2TD1228T-2/QA is built for sites where fire prevention, smoke detection, and perimeter classification all need to operate in the same camera. The thermal module uses a 256×192 VOx uncooled focal plane array with a 12 μm pixel pitch and NETD below 40 mK, detecting surface temperatures from -20°C to 550°C with an accuracy of ±2°C. Equipped with a 2.2 mm optical lens delivering a 2688×1520 image and IR coverage to 15 m, the camera also supports bi-spectrum image fusion to overlay thermal and visible detail in a single stream. It integrates fire detection, smoke detection, smoking detection, and a forklift alarm filter algorithm, alongside VCA rules covering line crossing, intrusion, region entrance, and region exiting. With IP67 protection, TVS 4000V lightning suppression, and a -40°C to 65°C operating range, the DS-2TD1228T-2/QA is suited to demanding industrial and commercial environments.

Key Capabilities

Bi-Spectrum Thermal and Optical Fusion

The DS-2TD1228T-2/QA overlays the 256×192 thermal channel onto the full-screen 2688×1520 optical view, giving operators both heat-source identification and visible detail in a single unified stream without switching between feeds.

Fire and Temperature Exception Detection

With a measurable temperature range of -20°C to 550°C and accuracy of ±2°C, the camera triggers configurable alarms when hotspots breach defined thresholds, making it directly applicable for material storage, machinery zones, and recycling processing lines.

Smoke and Smoking Detection Algorithm

Built-in algorithms detect the presence of smoke and smoking activity within the camera’s field of view, enabling early warning before flames appear. This is particularly relevant for enclosed warehouses, plant rooms, and areas where conventional smoke detectors may not reach.

Thermal VCA with Vehicle and Human Classification

Up to 8 VCA rules cover line crossing, intrusion, region entrance, and region exiting, with detection ranges of 16 m for humans and 48 m for vehicles via the thermal channel. The forklift alarm filter reduces nuisance triggers in active industrial yards.

Visible Light Night Coverage with White Light Alarm

The optical module provides IR illumination to 15 m and a configurable white light alarm to 30 m with adjustable flashing frequencies, enabling active deterrence alongside continuous thermal monitoring within the same unit.

Industrial-Grade Protection and Operating Range

IP67 weatherproofing combined with TVS 4000V lightning and surge protection, and a rated operating temperature from -40°C to 65°C, allow deployment in open industrial yards, exposed rooftop positions, and coastal or tropical environments without additional enclosures.

Best For

  • Industrial Fire Risk Monitoring: The -20°C to 550°C temperature range and real-time hotspot alarms make this camera suited to facilities where overheating equipment, combustible materials, or spontaneous ignition risks must be detected before a fire establishes.
  • Warehouses and Distribution Centres: Large open floor areas benefit from the 90°x65.4° thermal FOV, thermal VCA for human and vehicle classification out to 48 m, and the forklift filter that prevents alarm fatigue in active forklift traffic zones.
  • Perimeter Intrusion Detection at Night: The thermal channel detects body heat regardless of lighting conditions, while the optical IR and white light alarm provide a visible deterrent response when a VCA rule is triggered on the same unit.
  • Outdoor Installations Requiring Year-Round Reliability: The -40°C to 65°C operating range, IP67 rating, and TVS 4000V surge protection allow permanent mounting on exposed walls, gantries, or rooftop brackets without climate-controlled housings.
  • Smoke-Sensitive Environments: The dedicated smoke and smoking detection algorithm provides an additional layer of early warning in areas where smoke may accumulate before reaching ceiling-mounted conventional detectors, such as loading bays, open sheds, or processing halls.

Why Choose the DS-2TD1228T-2/QA

The DS-2TD1228T-2/QA does something a standard security camera cannot: it measures radiated heat from surfaces and triggers configurable temperature exception alarms before a fire develops. Most thermal cameras at this price point offer only basic heat visualisation. This model adds fire detection, smoke detection, smoking detection, a sun-reflection filter, and a forklift alarm filter within a single IP67-rated turret body, removing the need for separate thermal and optical camera installations at each point. The 10-year detector guarantee from Hikvision on the VOx UFPA sensor reflects the long service life expected in industrial deployments. With PoE 802.3af support, onboard MicroSD storage up to 256 GB, and compatibility with iVMS-4200 and Hik-Connect, integration into existing Hikvision infrastructure is straightforward. The DS-2TD1228T-2/QA is available through Security Wholesalers for sites requiring a genuinely capable bi-spectrum fire and intrusion detection camera in a compact turret format.

Buyer Decision Tips

Buyer Tip 1 – Thermal FOV vs Optical FOV: The thermal lens covers 90.0°x65.4° while the optical lens covers 117.8°x70.4°, meaning the two channels do not produce identical frame boundaries. When setting VCA rules or temperature measurement zones, configure them referencing the thermal channel FOV specifically. For sites where wide optical coverage is the priority and thermal is supplementary, ensure the thermal zone placement reflects the narrower thermal field.

Buyer Tip 2 – Temperature Measurement Rule Capacity: The DS-2TD1228T-2/QA supports 21 temperature measurement rules in total: 10 point rules, 10 area rules, and 1 line rule. For sites with multiple critical monitoring zones such as switchboards, conveyor bearings, or storage bays, map out the required zones before installation to confirm the 21-rule capacity is sufficient before deploying multiple cameras.

Ideal Use Cases

Recycling and Waste Processing Facilities

Spontaneous combustion in compacted recyclables and waste piles is a known risk. The camera’s temperature monitoring across 10 configurable area zones and 550°C detection ceiling allows continuous hotspot tracking across material storage bays and conveyor discharge points.

Warehouses with Racking and Cold Aisle Monitoring

The 90° thermal FOV and bi-spectrum image fusion allow a single camera to cover a wide racking bay while monitoring electrical distribution boards and HVAC units for temperature anomalies, with VCA intrusion rules active on the same stream.

Industrial Yards with Forklift Traffic

The built-in forklift alarm filter prevents forklift movement from generating false VCA intrusion alerts, allowing the camera to focus on pedestrian access events and thermal anomalies without constant nuisance alarms during operational hours.

Outdoor Perimeter Monitoring in All Conditions

Operating from -40°C to 65°C with IP67 protection and TVS 4000V surge suppression, the DS-2TD1228T-2/QA can be permanently mounted on external fence lines, loading dock gantries, or exposed rooftop positions without additional weatherproof housings.

Data Centres and Server Rooms

With 10 point and 10 area temperature measurement rules configurable per camera, operators can assign individual temperature thresholds to server racks, UPS units, and cable trays, receiving alarms before thermal runaway conditions develop.

Chemical Storage and Processing Areas

The smoke detection algorithm operates independently of the temperature alarm, providing early detection of smoke generated by chemical reaction or material degradation even in areas where temperatures may not yet be elevated enough to breach a fire alarm threshold.

Choosing the Right Model

  • Choose this model if: Your site requires continuous thermal temperature monitoring with configurable fire and smoke detection alarms, combined with 4MP optical video and VCA rules in a single IP67 outdoor turret camera rated for extreme operating temperatures.
  • Choose a different model if: You need thermal detection over ranges beyond 48 m, higher thermal resolution than 256×192 for precise long-distance target identification, or radiometric measurement accuracy better than ±2°C. In those cases, a higher-specification thermal camera with a longer focal length thermal lens would be more appropriate.
  • Choose a different model if: Your application is standard perimeter or building surveillance without any fire, smoke, or temperature monitoring requirement. A conventional optical turret camera with AI VCA would deliver similar intrusion detection at significantly lower cost per installation point.

FAQs

  1. What is the difference between the thermal and optical channels on the DS-2TD1228T-2/QA?
The thermal channel uses a VOx UFPA sensor to detect radiated heat from surfaces, measuring temperatures from -20°C to 550°C and triggering fire or temperature exception alarms. The optical channel is a 4MP CMOS sensor providing standard visible-light video with IR illumination to 15 m. Both channels can be displayed simultaneously through bi-spectrum image fusion, overlaying the thermal layer on the optical full-screen view.
  2. How many temperature measurement zones can be configured on one camera?
The DS-2TD1228T-2/QA supports 21 temperature measurement rules per camera: 10 point rules, 10 area rules, and 1 line rule. Each rule can have its own alarm threshold, allowing detailed monitoring of multiple heat sources within a single camera’s field of view without requiring additional hardware.
  3. Does the camera detect smoke and fire separately?
Yes. The DS-2TD1228T-2/QA runs a dedicated smoke detection algorithm and a separate fire detection algorithm as distinct smart functions. Smoking detection is also a separate configurable function. This means the camera can generate different alarm actions for each event type, enabling tiered responses based on the specific hazard detected.
  4. Is this camera suitable for outdoor installation in Australian summer conditions?
The DS-2TD1228T-2/QA is rated to operate up to 65°C ambient temperature with IP67 weatherproofing and TVS 4000V lightning and surge protection. This makes it appropriate for exposed outdoor mounting on walls, gantries, or roof structures in Australian summer environments without requiring supplementary cooling enclosures.
  5. Can the white light alarm be triggered by thermal events as well as VCA?
Yes. The white light visual alarm with adjustable flashing frequencies can be linked to both VCA rule events and temperature exception alarms. This means a detected hotspot exceeding a configured threshold can activate the white light strobe as part of the alarm response actions alongside SD recording, relay output, FTP upload, or email linkage.
  6. What network storage options does the DS-2TD1228T-2/QA support?
The camera supports onboard MicroSD/SDHC/SDXC storage up to 256 GB, network-attached storage via NFS or SMB/CIFS, and Auto Network Replenishment (ANR), which allows the camera to buffer recording to the SD card if the network connection is lost and then automatically upload to NAS once the connection is restored.
  7. Does the forklift alarm filter affect other VCA detection on the camera?
The forklift alarm filter is a dedicated algorithm that identifies forklift profiles to prevent them from generating false VCA intrusion alarms during operations. It operates alongside the standard VCA rules for human and vehicle classification and does not disable or reduce the camera’s ability to detect pedestrian intrusion or thermal anomalies through the temperature measurement rules. It is available through Security Wholesalers as part of the camera’s built-in smart function set with no additional licensing required.
