Product Overview

Wide-area monitoring across large outdoor sites demands more than a fixed camera can deliver, and the DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW is built precisely for that challenge. This 8MP 4K network speed dome combines a 1/1.2″ progressive scan CMOS sensor with 42x optical zoom and 16x digital zoom, allowing operators to closely examine subjects across expansive perimeters, infrastructure corridors, and critical-access zones. Equipped with DarkFighter technology, it maintains usable image quality in demanding low-light conditions, while the 500m IR range extends night-time coverage across distances that would exceed most fixed-camera deployments. It also includes face detection, tracking, capture, and best-picture selection, alongside vehicle recognition that identifies licence plate numbers, vehicle model, and vehicle colour. Built with IP66 weather resistance and IK10 vandal protection, and accepting Hi-PoE or 24VAC power, the DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW is suited to high-security outdoor installations including transport hubs, industrial facilities, campuses, and critical infrastructure sites.

Key Capabilities

42x Optical Zoom with 16x Digital Extension

The 42x optical zoom allows operators to pull in fine detail from extreme distances across large outdoor sites. Combined with 16x digital zoom, subjects can be examined closely without repositioning the camera or deploying additional units at intermediate distances.

8MP 4K Resolution

The 1/1.2″ progressive scan CMOS sensor delivers 8MP 4K output, producing footage with sufficient detail for identity-aware review and post-event analysis. At high zoom levels, this resolution ensures that face and vehicle features remain distinguishable even at range.

DarkFighter Low-Light Technology

DarkFighter technology improves colour and detail retention in very low ambient light conditions, reducing the gap between day and night performance. This is particularly relevant for perimeter and entrance monitoring where reliable visibility is needed regardless of lighting levels.

500m IR Night-Vision Range

The 500m infrared range extends active night-vision coverage across long outdoor approaches, large open areas, and infrastructure corridors. At this range, the camera can continue monitoring in complete darkness where perimeter lighting is absent or unreliable.

Face Detection, Tracking and Capture

The DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW detects, tracks, and captures faces in motion, with best-picture grading and selection. This supports identity-aware surveillance at entry points, checkpoints, and controlled access zones where human-level recognition is operationally required.

Vehicle Recognition with Licence Plate Reading

Built-in vehicle recognition supports detection of licence plate numbers, vehicle model, and vehicle colour. This is useful for monitoring vehicle entry points, car parks, and controlled access areas where identifying specific vehicles is part of the security requirement.

Best For

  • Large Perimeter and Boundary Monitoring: The 42x optical zoom and 500m IR range allow a single camera to cover long fence lines, outer boundaries, or extended driveways that would otherwise require multiple fixed cameras.
  • Critical Infrastructure and High-Security Facilities: Face detection, tracking, and vehicle recognition make this camera suited to installations where identifying individuals or vehicles at access points is a core operational requirement.
  • Transport Hubs and Entry Control Points: Vehicle licence plate reading and colour recognition support monitoring of vehicle entry points, including car parks, boom gates, and loading dock access lanes.
  • Industrial Sites and Warehousing Compounds: IP66 weather resistance and IK10 vandal protection make this camera suitable for exposed industrial environments where the camera housing may be subject to impact or harsh conditions.
  • Night-Time Outdoor Surveillance at Extended Range: DarkFighter technology combined with 500m IR means monitoring remains effective after dark across sites where ambient lighting is limited or non-existent.

Why Choose the DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW

The DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW sits at a level of capability that a standard fixed outdoor camera or basic PTZ cannot match. The 42x optical zoom paired with an 8MP 4K sensor means that zoomed-in footage retains the resolution needed for meaningful review, rather than delivering a blurry close-up. The 500m IR range covers distances that most mid-range PTZ cameras do not reach, making it a practical choice for large outdoor sites where a shorter-range unit would leave significant blind coverage at night. Face detection with best-picture capture, and vehicle recognition including licence plate, model, and colour, add identity-aware capability that justifies this camera at high-security or controlled-access installations. IP66 and IK10 ratings ensure the housing withstands both weather and physical impact in demanding outdoor deployments. Available at Security Wholesalers, the DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW is stocked and ready to ship, backed by a 3-year warranty.

Buyer Decision Tips

Power Supply Planning: The DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW requires Hi-PoE or 24VAC power. Standard PoE switches rated at 15.4W or 30W cannot deliver sufficient power for this camera. If running over a network cable, a dedicated Hi-PoE injector such as the HIK-HIPOE-INJ is required. If using 24VAC, ensure the transformer is sized correctly for the cable run distance and any other devices sharing the circuit.

Mounting and Cable Entry: As a speed dome, this camera requires a compatible wall mount bracket with a weatherproof junction box to protect cabling at the mounting point. The DS-1604ZJ-P bracket is listed as a compatible accessory for this series. Plan the cable entry path before installation, as the junction box must be fitted before the camera is secured to the bracket to keep all connections protected from weather.

Ideal Use Cases

Perimeter Fence Lines

The 42x optical zoom and 500m IR range allow a single DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW to monitor extended fence lines and boundary zones in both day and night conditions, reducing the number of camera positions needed across large secured sites.

Controlled Vehicle Entry Points

Vehicle recognition with licence plate reading, model detection, and colour identification makes this camera a practical fit for boom gate entry lanes, loading dock access points, and car park entry zones where vehicle logging is required.

Critical Infrastructure Monitoring

For utilities, communications, and transport infrastructure sites, the combination of 4K resolution, face tracking with best-picture output, and long-range IR delivers surveillance at the level required for high-security outdoor applications.

Industrial Yards and Warehousing Compounds

IP66 weatherproofing and IK10 impact resistance make this speed dome suitable for industrial yard deployment where the camera is exposed to dust, rain, and potential physical contact. The PTZ capability allows operators to respond to events across the full yard.

Campus and Large Venue Monitoring

Large educational campuses, stadiums, and event venues benefit from the 42x zoom and PTZ movement, allowing security operators to monitor wide open areas from an overview position and rapidly zoom to investigate specific incidents without camera relocation.

Checkpoint and Access Control Support

Face detection, tracking, capture, and best-picture grading support identity-focused monitoring at manned checkpoints and access control lanes, providing supplementary visual capture that can be reviewed in conjunction with access control records.

Choosing the Right Model

  • Choose this model if: Your site requires long-range PTZ coverage beyond 200m at night, identity-aware monitoring through face detection and vehicle licence plate recognition, and the camera must withstand outdoor weathering and physical impact in a demanding environment.
  • Choose a different model if: Your site does not require extreme zoom range or identity recognition features. A fixed bullet or turret camera with standard IR coverage will be a more cost-effective choice for straightforward outdoor monitoring of a defined, static area where PTZ control and long-range zoom are not operationally required.
  • Consider power supply before purchasing: If your existing network infrastructure only supports standard PoE (802.3af/at), you will need a Hi-PoE injector or a 24VAC transformer to power this camera. Budget and plan for this before installation.

FAQs

  1. What power supply does the DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW require?
This camera requires either Hi-PoE or 24VAC power. Standard PoE switches and injectors rated at 15.4W (802.3af) or 30W (802.3at) do not deliver sufficient power. If you are running the camera over Cat5e or Cat6, you will need a dedicated Hi-PoE injector. If you prefer a separate power feed, a 24VAC transformer sized appropriately for the cable run distance is the alternative.
  2. Does the 500m IR range apply across the full 42x zoom range?
The 500m IR distance represents the maximum rated range under optimal conditions. Effective IR performance varies with zoom level, surface reflectivity, and environmental factors such as fog or rain. At maximum zoom, the IR beam narrows to concentrate illumination on a smaller area, which supports longer-range visibility on zoomed subjects but reduces the width of the illuminated zone.
  3. What does the face detection and capture feature actually do?
The DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW detects faces in the frame, tracks them as they move through the scene, and captures multiple images. It then grades those images and selects the best-quality capture, providing a usable face image for review. This is distinct from facial recognition and does not match faces against a database. It supports identity-focused review rather than automated identification.
  4. What does vehicle recognition cover on this camera?
The vehicle recognition capability supports detection of licence plate numbers, vehicle model type, and vehicle colour. This provides useful metadata for monitoring vehicle entry points and reviewing incidents involving specific vehicles, without requiring a separate dedicated ANPR system in lower-traffic applications.
  5. Is this camera suitable for wall mounting outdoors?
Yes. The DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW is designed for outdoor deployment with IP66 weather resistance and IK10 vandal protection. Wall mounting requires a compatible bracket with an integrated junction box to protect the cable termination point. The DS-1604ZJ-P wall mount bracket with junction box is listed as a compatible accessory for this speed dome series.
  6. Can this camera operate effectively in complete darkness?
Yes. The 500m infrared range means the camera has its own active illumination for night-time operation in the absence of any ambient light. DarkFighter technology also improves performance in low ambient light before the IR illuminators become the primary light source, extending the conditions under which the camera captures usable colour and detail.
  7. What resolution does the camera record at?
The DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW captures video at 8MP 4K resolution using a 1/1.2″ progressive scan CMOS sensor. This resolution supports detailed post-event review and is particularly useful when the 42x zoom is used, as higher base resolution means more usable detail is retained in the zoomed image compared to lower-resolution PTZ cameras.
  8. Where can I purchase the DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW with warranty support in Australia?
The DS-2DF8C842IXS-AELW is available through Security Wholesalers and is stocked ready to ship with a 3-year warranty. Compatible accessories including the Hi-PoE injector and wall mount bracket with junction box are also available to complete the installation.
