Product Overview

Wide-area monitoring across a car park, business perimeter, or open commercial yard demands more than a fixed camera can offer. The Dahua SD49225DB-HNY is a 2MP PTZ speed dome built to handle exactly these scenarios, combining a 25x optical zoom lens with Starlight low-light technology and 100m IR illumination. Featuring a 4.8-120mm motorised lens and full pan, tilt, and zoom control, this camera can sweep an entire site and lock onto a specific point of interest from a single mounting position. Equipped with SMD Plus through the WizSense platform, it filters detections to focus on humans and vehicles, reducing unwanted alerts. It runs on PoE+ over a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable, and its IP66-rated housing stands up to outdoor exposure year-round. The SD49225DB-HNY suits mid-sized commercial installations where operator-controlled coverage and low-light capability are non-negotiable.

Key Capabilities

25x Optical Zoom

A 4.8-120mm motorised lens allows operators to shift from wide-area overview to close-up detail without moving the camera. This is particularly useful for identifying individuals or reading number plates across large open spaces like car parks or industrial yards.

Starlight Low-Light Performance

The Exmor R CMOS sensor with Starlight processing delivers usable colour or greyscale video in near-dark conditions. For outdoor sites with minimal ambient lighting, this reduces reliance on supplementary lights during the critical hours after dusk.

100m IR Night Vision

Built-in infrared illumination reaches up to 100 metres, providing coverage across long driveways, fence lines, and loading areas even in total darkness. The IR output adjusts automatically to complement the current zoom level.

60fps at 1080p

Recording and streaming at up to 60 frames per second ensures fast-moving subjects, including vehicles and pedestrians, are captured clearly without motion blur. This is a notable advantage in high-traffic outdoor settings where standard 25fps can introduce smearing.

SMD Plus with WizSense

Smart Motion Detection Plus uses AI classification to separate human and vehicle movement from animals, foliage, and other non-relevant triggers. This keeps alarm notifications actionable and reduces operator fatigue on monitored systems.

PoE+ Powering

IEEE 802.3at PoE+ delivers both data and power over a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable run, eliminating the need for a local power supply at the camera head. This simplifies installation on poles, walls, and building facades at height.

Best For

  • Commercial Car Parks and Open Yards: The 25x optical zoom lets a single PTZ unit cover an entire bay area and zoom into a specific vehicle or entry point on demand, reducing total camera count.
  • Perimeter and Fence Line Monitoring: With 100m IR and SMD Plus filtering, the SD49225DB-HNY can patrol a long fence line and flag human or vehicle intrusions without generating alerts from wind-blown vegetation.
  • After-Hours and Low-Light Environments: Starlight sensor technology maintains image quality in near-dark outdoor conditions, making it well suited to sites where lighting is minimal overnight.
  • Operator-Monitored Security Rooms: The full PTZ control with high-speed pan and tilt allows security staff to track subjects across a site in real time, responding to incidents as they develop rather than reviewing footage after the fact.

Why Choose the SD49225DB-HNY

The SD49225DB-HNY addresses a specific gap in PTZ camera selections at this price point: the combination of a proper Starlight sensor, a 25x optical zoom with a 4.8-120mm motorised lens, and WizSense SMD Plus intelligence in a single PoE+-powered unit. Many entry-level PTZ cameras compromise on either night-time image quality or detection intelligence. This model does not. The 60fps recording capability is rarely found at this resolution in the PTZ segment and makes a real difference for tracking fast-moving subjects. The IP66-rated housing is appropriate for exposed rooftop, pole, and wall mounting across Australian outdoor conditions. Available through Security Wholesalers, the SD49225DB-HNY is backed by Dahua’s local documentation and support resources, and is compatible with Dahua NVRs and DSS software for centralised management.

Buyer Decision Tips

PoE+ Switch Requirement: The SD49225DB-HNY draws up to 20W and requires an IEEE 802.3at PoE+ port, not a standard PoE 802.3af port. Confirm your switch or injector supports PoE+ before installation. A port rated for only 15.4W will not reliably power this camera, particularly during cold-start pan and tilt movements which draw peak current.

Coverage Planning vs. Resolution Trade-Off: At 2MP (1080p), this camera delivers smooth 60fps video across a wide zoom range, but sites that require forensic-level identification at maximum zoom distances may benefit from considering a higher-resolution PTZ instead. If your primary use is wide-area situational awareness with periodic zoom-in for verification, the SD49225DB-HNY is well matched to the task.

Ideal Use Cases

Commercial Car Parks

The 25x optical zoom and 100m IR range allow a single mounted unit to cover entry lanes, bays, and pedestrian zones. SMD Plus reduces false triggers from vehicle headlight glare and wind-blown debris common in open-air car parks.

Industrial and Warehouse Perimeters

A single SD49225DB-HNY positioned at a corner can sweep an entire yard perimeter and zoom into any point along a fence line. The IP66 housing withstands dust, rain, and temperature variation in open industrial environments.

Monitored Security Operations

For sites with a staffed security room, the full PTZ controls enable real-time tracking of individuals across a wide area. The 60fps frame rate ensures subjects remain clear during rapid pan or tilt movements.

Construction Sites

Construction sites change layout frequently, making a steerable PTZ camera far more practical than fixed units. The Starlight sensor maintains visibility during low-light early morning and late evening shifts without supplementary lighting.

Outdoor Event Venues

For outdoor venues managing crowd flow or vehicle access, the PTZ’s ability to zoom from a wide overview to a tight shot and back makes it useful for event monitoring where scene conditions shift rapidly throughout a session.

Choosing the Right Model

  • Choose this model if: You need a PoE+-powered outdoor PTZ with 25x optical zoom, 100m IR, Starlight low-light performance, and WizSense SMD Plus detection in a single IP66-rated unit for a mid-sized commercial or industrial site.
  • Choose a different model if: Your site requires forensic-level identification at maximum zoom distances – a higher-resolution PTZ (4MP or above) will provide more pixel density for positive identification at the far end of the zoom range.
  • Choose a different model if: Your installation point only has standard PoE (802.3af) available and running a new PoE+ cable or injector is not practical. This camera requires the full 802.3at standard to operate correctly.
  • Choose a different model if: Coverage of a fixed, narrow zone is the only requirement. A fixed-lens or varifocal bullet or turret camera will deliver higher effective resolution across a static field of view and at a lower cost than a PTZ unit used purely in a static position.

FAQs

  1. What PoE standard does the SD49225DB-HNY require?
This camera requires IEEE 802.3at PoE+ with a maximum draw of 20W. Standard 802.3af PoE ports are limited to 15.4W and are not sufficient to reliably power this unit. Ensure your NVR, PoE switch, or inline injector explicitly supports 802.3at on the port connected to this camera.
  2. What does the 25x optical zoom actually cover in the field?
The 4.8-120mm lens provides a wide-angle view at its shortest focal length and a narrow telephoto view at 120mm. In practical terms, this means the camera can monitor a broad scene overview and then zoom into a specific doorway, number plate area, or individual from the same mounting position without any physical repositioning.
  3. How does the Starlight technology differ from standard night vision?
Standard IR-only cameras produce greyscale images in darkness. Starlight uses an Exmor R CMOS sensor with higher light sensitivity to retain usable image detail in near-dark conditions before switching to IR. In environments with low ambient light (street lighting, car park poles), the Starlight sensor maintains better contrast and colour rendering than a conventional CMOS sensor would at the same light level.
  4. Does the IR range adjust when I zoom in?
Yes. Dahua’s PTZ cameras with adaptive IR adjust the infrared illumination angle and intensity to match the current zoom level. When zoomed to the full 25x telephoto position, the IR narrows to concentrate illumination at the longer distance. This prevents overexposure at close range when zoomed wide and underexposure at distance when zoomed in.
  5. What mounting options are available for this camera?
The SD49225DB-HNY is designed for ceiling or pendant mounting. Confirmed optional accessories include the PFB300C ceiling mount bracket, the PFA120 junction box, and the PFA150 pole mount bracket. These allow installation on suspended ceilings, concrete soffits, walls, and round poles depending on your site configuration.
  6. What is SMD Plus and how does it work on this camera?
SMD Plus (Smart Motion Detection Plus) is part of Dahua’s WizSense AI platform. It classifies motion events as human or vehicle before triggering an alert, filtering out movement caused by animals, foliage, rain, and lighting changes. This is distinct from basic motion detection, which triggers on any pixel change in the frame. For an outdoor PTZ monitoring a large area, SMD Plus significantly reduces the volume of irrelevant alarm events.
  7. Is the SD49225DB-HNY compatible with Dahua NVRs and management software?
Yes. The SD49225DB-HNY is compatible with Dahua NVRs supporting Onvif and Dahua proprietary protocol, as well as Dahua DSS (Dahua Security System) software for centralised management. PTZ presets, patrol paths, and alarm-triggered auto-tracking functions are accessible through compatible Dahua management platforms. Confirm your specific NVR model supports PTZ camera integration before purchase. This model is available through Security Wholesalers with full Dahua documentation included.
