Junior Security Detective Academy
Parent Guide to Kids Home Security Learning
A parent and carer guide for using the Junior Security Detective Academy calmly and practically with children aged 8 to 13.
Parents and carers can use this hub to start calm conversations about safety. The aim is not to make children suspicious of everything. The aim is to give them clear rules: notice concerns, avoid risky action, protect private information and ask trusted adults for help.
How to talk about safety without fear
Use everyday examples: closing the door, checking the gate, not sharing passwords, and telling an adult when something feels wrong. Avoid scary stories. Focus on practical steps and trusted helpers.
Family phrase
“You do not have to solve it alone. Tell me, and we will handle it together.”
Simple family rules
- Do not open the door to unexpected visitors without adult permission.
- Do not share alarm codes, door codes, Wi-Fi passwords or app logins with friends.
- Do not post photos that reveal addresses, routines or school details.
- Do not click strange links or download files without asking.
- In an emergency in Australia, call Triple Zero: 000.
Use the missions together
Walk through Spot the Risk or Design a Safe Home with your child. Let them make suggestions, then explain which ideas are practical, which need professional setup, and which might create privacy issues.
Kids Safety at Home — new section
The academy now includes a dedicated Kids Safety at Home section covering four practical topics your child can read independently or explore with you:
Home alone safety
Rules and a printable checklist for when your child is home without an adult.
SafetyUnexpected visitors
How to handle the door calmly, including a family visitor rules template.

SafetyFire safety
Smoke alarms, escape routes, Stop Drop Roll and the golden rule: get out and stay out.
