Kids Security Glossary

Simple definitions for alarm, CCTV, privacy, smart home and online safety words.

Use this glossary when a lesson uses a new security word. The definitions are written for kids and classrooms.

Alarm panel

The brain of an alarm system that receives sensor signals and follows programmed rules.

Arming

Turning alarm protection on.

CCTV

Closed-circuit television: security cameras used for live viewing or recording.

Control panel

Another name for the alarm brain.

Door sensor

A sensor that notices when a door opens.

False alarm

An alarm event that happens when there is not a real emergency.

Infrared

A type of light some cameras use to see at night. People usually cannot see it.

Live view

Watching a camera feed as it happens.

Motion detector

A sensor that notices movement.

NVR

Network video recorder, a device that records IP camera footage.

Playback

Watching recorded footage from earlier.

Privacy

Respect for personal spaces and personal information.

Siren

The loud warning sound an alarm can make.

Smart device

A device that connects to a network or app.

Strong password

A password that is long, unique and hard to guess.
