How Much Storage Do I Need for CCTV? Leave a comment

Storage depends on four key factors: resolution, number of cameras, frame rate, and recording mode.

As a guide, a 1TB hard drive can store about 2–3 weeks of footage from 4 × 2MP cameras recording continuously. If you upgrade to 8MP (4K) resolution, the same drive may only last a few days. Larger properties with more cameras will need 4TB or more.

Motion detection can stretch storage further, while lowering frame rates (e.g., 15fps instead of 30fps) also saves space without much loss in quality.

Always use a surveillance-grade hard drive designed for 24/7 recording. These drives last longer and are more reliable under constant use compared to standard desktop drives.

Planning storage ensures you won’t lose vital footage when you need it most.
