Schools increasingly rely on expensive IT equipment, making them prime targets for thieves. In 2020, an Auckland secondary school lost over $30,000 worth of laptops and tablets in an overnight theft. Thankfully, cameras covering the IT storage room, hallways, and entrances recorded the suspects’ movements. Police used the footage to identify the thieves and recover most of the stolen items.
IT and AV rooms, server closets, and storerooms often contain thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment yet remain inadequately secured. The Auckland incident demonstrated how targeted camera placement can minimise losses and aid quick recovery.
After the theft, the school invested in upgraded locks, motion-activated alerts tied to their CCTV system, and additional cameras covering staff-only areas and exterior exits. Staff were reminded of the importance of locking doors and keeping valuables out of sight.
Parents and students appreciated the school’s fast response and the steps taken to prevent future incidents. In fact, the school was able to negotiate a lower insurance premium by demonstrating enhanced security measures.
Regular audits of high-value areas, combined with CCTV monitoring, protect valuable equipment, avoid service disruptions, and maintain trust with stakeholders.
