In 2021, a disturbing incident at St Mary’s Primary School in Sydney highlighted the importance of perimeter surveillance. Late one evening, well after dismissal, a security guard monitoring the school’s CCTV system noticed a man lingering around the playground fence before entering the grounds. The guard recognised the man as a registered offender from a prior police bulletin and immediately notified authorities. Police arrived on site quickly and arrested the individual without harm to anyone.

Children’s play areas are particularly vulnerable because they are often accessible from adjacent streets and poorly lit after hours. In this case, cameras placed along the perimeter fence and at entry gates provided full visibility of the intruder’s movements. The footage later proved valuable in court, corroborating police reports of his intent to trespass. The man had a history of trespassing on school property and was already under a restraining order prohibiting him from approaching minors.

Following the incident, St Mary’s invested in upgrading its cameras to include motion-triggered notifications sent directly to key staff smartphones. This allowed for faster response even when monitoring staff were not on-site. Additional lighting, clearer signage, and community awareness programs were also introduced to deter potential intruders and reassure families.

Parents were understandably shaken, but many expressed relief that the school’s security systems worked as intended, and that their children’s safety was clearly a top priority. The principal held an information session with families and police to explain the incident, outline improvements, and educate the community about the importance of vigilance.

Schools should consider playgrounds and other outdoor areas as critical parts of their security plan. Well-positioned cameras with intelligent alerts, combined with visible deterrents and open communication with families, can help prevent these frightening situations and maintain a safe environment for students.
